There have been many changes in society during the past decade. with legal and technological developments prominent among them; against this background the liability underwriter has had to contend with rapidly changing attitudes. and as we move into the 1980s there are two major problems confronting liability insurers. namely inflation and rising damages. Insurers have no control over either but they have to be sure that premium assessed at today's value is sufficient to meet claims many years later when inflation may have played havoc with the cost of settlement. Further. it is apparent that the trend set in the mid 1970s for a more realistic assessment of the plaintiff's loss. bearing in mind inflation. has gained momentum and six figure awards have become much more common. These matters apart. there are proposals to introduce a system of strict liability into the UK and EEC which. if adopted. will have a marked effect on the underwriter's attitude to product liability risks in the future. All in all. the 1980s promise to be a very challenging decade for liability insurers and in this climate of change it is essential for all those engaged in the business to keep up to date with legal. technological and economic developments.
