Human Behavior at Work Organizational Behavior
This book is about people at work in all kinds of organizations and how they may be motivated to work together in greater harmony. This subject is called human relations. organizational behavior. or human behavior at work. and it is an integration of social sciences as they affect people at work. A subject as vast as this can be merely introduced in the space of one book. Management. labor. and others can take justifiable credit for excellent advances in organizational behavior during the last half century. but there is a long way to go. Perhaps this book can suggest directions toward further improvement.
All people who work in organizations should find this book help-ful. It is designed for use in university courses. management development programs. advanced supervisory training. adult education classes. and management self-study.
The book has been tested on the firing line in university classrooms
and in organizations for more than twenty years. and many ideas
offered by users of earlier editions have been incorporated into this new one. I have expanded features desired by readers. such as charts and examples from actual practice to illustrate ideas. Emphasis is given to content and substance. with thorough citations to research. rather than elementary platitudes and notions.
In order to produce a book that is both teachable and readable. I have tried to present material in an organized fashion that will enable readers to integrate the various parts of this discipline into a whole philosophy of organizational behavior. Where appropriate. I have included different viewpoints in order to encourage readers to do their own thinking on a subject. but I have attempted to screen out trivialities and fads.
