As computer technology makes computer facilities increasingly accessible to all of us. it is increasingly important. especially for those students planning careers in business. to understand business information pro-cessing. It is not enough to be able to play blackjack with a computer.
The primary objective of this text is to introduce the concepts of business information processing. We pursue this objective on several levels. First. we speak directly to the purposes and structure of business information systems. We explore analysis methods. the design of business information systems. and the controls necessary to the integrity and accuracy of a system. Second. we concentrate heavily on the development of computer programs that accomplish business information processing tasks. We attempt to develop computer programming skill in the students. and focus that skill on example programs that are representative of the tasks we ask computers to do in business information systems.
There are several reasons for developing computer programming skills. One is to enable students to use a computer as a tool in further study. Courses in many disciplines are finding that examples carried out by students with the help of a computer deepen the students' understanding of their disciplines; we want to help to implement this kind of computer use. Second. the explosion of minicomputers and microcomputers has created an awesome need for computer programming. The competition for programmers is fierce. to the great enjoyment of students preparing for careers in information processing.
