Respectable citizens - shady practices : the economic morality of the middle classes
Respectable Citizens-Shady Practices explores a previously neglected aspect of crime in modern society. namely those crimes that are committed by otherwise 'respectable' citizens in the market arena. The book delves into the 'grey zone' where illegal. unfair. unethical. and shady' practices coalesce. From the retailers who see themselves as victims of customers who take unfair and often illegal advantage of generous offers. to the consumers sold 'useless' insurance and financial packages and are 'defrauded' by 'small-print' clauses. a vicious cycle of unfair behaviour develops. with the erosion of good practices and normative standards. The contours of the contemporary moral economy are outlined. driven. and shaped by technological innovation as much as new economic policies. The book asks: is a 'predatory society' emerging from the central sphere of consumption? Using qualitative and quantitative data. the authors examine three case studies: England and Wales. the former West Germany. and the former East Germany. The first two represent established market societies that have undergone considerable change following the introduction of neo-liberal market and social policies. while the former East Germany represents a very specific trajectory of transition to market society. The authors explore the normative patterns and frameworks of consumption by examining the victimization of consumers via large- and small-scale fraud and unfair practices on the one hand. as well as their own involvement as offenders in an array of illegal and 'unethical' ('sharp' and 'shady') practices in different areas of consumption (including government services) on the other. The book establishes a relationship between victimization and offending. and shows how both are embedded in and affect the basic morality of consumption and markets.
