Research Methods For Business and Management

L. R. Gay. P. L. Diehl - Nama Orang;

Like employers. colleges and schools of business are increasingly concerned over the ability of their graduates to collect and present data for decision making in a thorough and professional manner. Increasingly the business climate emphasizes efforts at improving productivity. handling extraordinary technological change. and managing with a shortage of resources. including humans. As business schools and employers are realizing. these conditions tend to favor the manager who is able to support his or her ideas with concrete evidence. As a small example. an issue of Psychology Today ran an article (Work or Perk. 1188) lamenting the lack of quantitative evaluation of the effectiveness of expensive management training programs. Concrete evidence and quantitative evaluation do not come from those who rely on intuition and authority but from persons who possess the necessary skill. knowledge. and ability to evaluate and conduct research in areas previously closed to the more quantitatively trained business major. As change becomes even more rapid. and accountability and competition increase. the need for training in business-and-management research is very likely to increase. thus expanding the market demand for graduates skilled in business-and-management research. The underlying need for these skills has been expressed in the following way:
The behavioral sciences have enormous potential to add to organizational effectiveness.
Carefully managed interventions like quality circles have the potential to aid managers as they attempt to compete in both domestic and international arenas. The key to effectiveness may be to avoid a faddish. bandwagon approach and. instead. to develop an appropriate menu of interventions that we have some basis for recommending and some understanding of how to manage. (Griffin. June. 1988. Academy of Management Journal. p. 356.)
The research course you are beginning is intended to help you become competent in finding. evaluating. and applying research findings to a wide variety of problems you will encounter both as a student and also as a working professional.
