Statistics for Management
Specific Features of This Book That Make Teaching and Learning Statistics Easier
If you have used a previous edition of our book. or if you just thumb through this edition. you'll quickly see the extensive set of pedagogical aids built into the text and the supplements that accompany it. Each of these features has a specific role in making teaching and learning statistics more effective and less painful. We'll take a few minutes here and describe for you the new features that have been added in this edition:
* The material on hypothesis testing has been expanded and divided into two chapters (one-sample tests and two-sample tests). In addition. we explain hypothesis testing using both the raw scale and the standardized scale.
* A new chapter on quality and quality control appears in this edition. This exciting application of statistical concepts is widely discussed in the business press. and our new chapter reinforces something students may read about every day. thereby providing hands-on experience with these concepts.
* Each chapter begins with a table of contents. which outlines the topics to follow and lists the page on which each topic begins.
* A stat stop precedes almost every set of exercises in the book. A stat stop is a short set of hints. a comment about the exercises that follow. or some do's and don'ts to help students handle the exercises with more facility and success.
* We've added real-world exercises to this edition. The review exercises at the end of each chapter contain a set of exercises that come directly from real business and economic sit-uations. with the source of each problem clearly noted. These give students practice in setting up and solving some of the messy statistics problems that we encounter in managerial situations.
* We think you'll like our new Statistics at Work series of conceptual cases about Loveland Computers. In each case. an employee of Loveland must apply the statistical concepts introduced in that (or a previous) chapter to company problems. But there are no numbers in these cases! Thus. the emphasis is on identifying problems. choosing correct solution approaches. and dealing with company managers without getting bogged down with numbers.
* The new master glossary is an alphabetical listing of all of the terms in the individual
