Use of Business English
This book is designed to develop the reader's English vocabulary. grammar and spelling and to apply these skills to effective business communication.
To answer the question in the heading. business English is exactly like any other English. and the expression has only one meaning. which is 'English used in a business context'. It is important to stress this. because 'business English' is not a separate part of the language. It does not have its own rules. nor does it involve learning a series of mechanical phrases whose usefulness - if it ever existed - vanished long ago. Chapter 2 will discuss some of these phrases. because it is in the business letter that they have survived longest and done most harm.
Business English. however. has some recognisable characteristics. None of them is confined to the business world but. when taken together. they add up to what may fairly be called a style of writing. In order to analyse this style. and to master the principles which govern it. we will need to examine two things; the purpose of business communication. and the methods by which that purpose is best achieved. The sections which follow are central to this whole course and the words and sentences in italics should. if possible. be memorised.
